Japanese wireless operator NTT DoCoMo said Thursday that it has achieved data speeds of 1 Gbps in field tests of fourth-generation (4G) technology.

DoCoMo, which is generally credited with being the most successful operator offering 3G technology, has been researching and testing 4G technology for more than two years. The company said that it achieved its 1 Gbps speeds using a technology called Variable Spreading Factor-Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (VSF-Spread OFDM). The system also uses Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna technology, the company said in a statement.

The company said it will continue its research and field trial program and that its goal is to develop a global standard for 4G. It said it will work with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to develop that standard.

NTT DoCoMo said its goal -- and the goal of the Japanese government -- is to have 4G service commercialized by 2010.
