In addition to the tried-and-true collection of Letters You Never Want to See—the tax audit, the high cholesterol reading, the college rejection letter—there is now the missive that reveals you are on the fast track to becoming a victim of identify theft. Someone may have taken possession of your credit-card info, Social Security number, bank account or other personal data that would enable him or her to go on a permanent shopping spree—leaving you to deal with the financial, legal and psychic bills.

Matéria relacionada ao crescimento exponencial do roubo de dados pessoais de cidadãos no mundo inteiro. Tem relação (e provavelmente foi motivada) pela recente notícia do potencial roubo de 40 milhões de fichas de dados cadastrais de clientes da Mastercard/Maestro, nos EUA.

No Brasil, as operadoras de telefonia estimam que somente neste setor o uso de dados falso para a habilitação de linhas telefônicas (inclusive linhas móveis) alcança prejuízos de R$450 milhões ao ano, sendo inclusive uma das maiores reclamações de consumidores em ações judiciais contra as cias.
